Release Date: 2nd February 2017 (Wii U Virtual Console UK)
It’s Bomberman’s 33rd birthday this year, and he’s celebrating in style after everybody missed his 30th, with a collection of classic re-releases and a brand spanking new game on the brand spanking new Nintendo Switch. This is one of his older entries, but with the help of some hopping kangaroos, it’s also one of the best.
Bomberman ’94, known as Mega Bomberman in the West, is classic Bomberman through and through. The objective is to explore each map and blow up the opposition, be they friendly looking critters in the single player, or friends in the timeless 5 player multiplayer mode. Whichever option you choose, there is plenty of fun to be had with the explosive top down arcade action. Upgrades can be discovered under blocks to upgrade bomb power, but with great power comes great responsibility regarding your own safety. Go crazy and watch your new-found power-ups become your own undoing.
New additions to the formula which make ’94 that little bit ‘mega’ are the inclusion of the Louies, kangaroo type creatures which provide jumping, kicking, running, block breaking, and um… dancing powers to assist Bomberman on his destructive journey. Some of these powers are available elsewhere, but the Louies also act a shield, so Bomberman can carry on bombing even after Louie has turned into a burning carcass, most likely due to your own unhinged chaos.
Chunky visuals, cute helpers, classic action, a birthday blast from the past.
