Channel Gaming’s 2017 List Of Shiny New Games That Were Kind Of Fun To Play

Despite a constant flow of unboxings and plastic, not a lot of games end up finished here at Channel Gaming, at least not any new ones, anyway. So rather than a best of 2017, here we have five games which were kind of fun to play. I kind of like this idea, don’t you? And also, these five games are all kind of Nintendo releases… kind of.

5.1 2 Switch

1 2 Switch is the token Nintendo novelty launch title, showcasing what those Nintendo Switch joy cons can do. You can use them to feel balls, swing samurai swords, eat sandwiches, or even tug and milk cow’s udders. Let’s get physical is how we play, and at the Nintendo Switch Manchester preview event, it was a real joy to see attendees get to grips with embarrassment. As for me, I’ll dance and swing till the cows come home.

4. Super Mario Run

Apple owners could enjoy Super Mario Run back in 2016, but poor neglected Android plebs had to wait a few months longer. But running and tapping never gets old with Mario, so 2017 was a year of coin grabbing, kingdom building, and funky music mixing for those who kept running till the chunky remix update hit. Playing Mario to the beats of the Butthole Surfers will forever be a fresh mushroom fuelled experience. Jump to Jimi.

3. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe

Mario Kart 8 is old news, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is new news, that’s how it goes after Nintendo brushed the Wii U into a nearby furnace. For those who retain memories of that 2012-2016 Nintendo void, this might not seem worthy of a 2017 top spot, but the new battle mode which plays like the old battle modes of MK’s past fixed a terrible wrong. Isn’t that a worthy enough reason to forget about the void with everyone else?

2. Fire Emblem Heroes

Fire Emblem Heroes is perhaps, thus far, the best adaptation of Nintendo series to mobile. It looks like FE, it sounds like FE, it probably smells like FE, but most importantly, it actually even plays like FE! This turn based strategy is perfect for quick one-handed sessions between texting, and when you unlock more characters with slightly risqué designs, well, you know what that other hand may well be for… not mine!

1.  Puyo Puyo Tetris

Puyo Puyo Tetris combines blocks and blobs for the ultimate crossover in the whole universe! There are few joys in life that match annihilating your friend with an 8x Tetris combo as they fumble around with their coloured goo, and few pains that match having to beg that same friend to continue playing as they experience one loss too many. Despite its sugar-coated sweetness of it all, this game makes and breaks the best of us.

And as they say, that’s a wrap. Maybe this year I’ll find time to keep my retro gaming at bay, and then I can go and talk about that there new Mario, and that there new Zelda… maybe, I do kind of like my 8 bits. Don’t we all?
