It wasn’t so long ago I was talking about World Heroes 2, March in fact, but here we are with World Heroes 2 Jet, the update, not the sequel. You see, back in the 90’s things like download content and patches weren’t possible, so if you wanted to add new things, it was either a sequel or this. It worked for Street Fighter II, and considering World Heroes is the off brand Street Fighter for the NeoGeo, it made sense for the series to follow suit. Like a jet.
The subtitle ‘Jet’ makes this World Heroes II the Street Fighter II Turbo of the series, adding two new furious fighters, whilst cranking up the pace with a number of new manoeuvres for a fluid time travelling fighting tournament, namely the ability to dash towards or away from your opponent. It helps remove some of the clunk the series has always been shackled with, though not all, it wouldn’t be the chunky World Heroes we know (and love?) otherwise.
When it comes to game modes, the hazard packed Death Match mode from previous entries has been murdered out, with a new Tournament mode taking centre stage. This kind of does the King of Fighters thing, with three fighters to take on per match, though when the option isn’t present for the player, it’s you versus the world. A half measure that only makes sense in this series.
The update gives us the game World Heroes 2 should have been, but it’s still no king.
